Within the context of settler-colonial history in Alberta, how can mixed-media visual art practice be used to recover and remember personally significant traditions, migration stories, and domestic knowledge carried through family? To what extent can the reclaiming of Norwegian, Welsh and Slovak cultural knowledge (recipes, farming knowledge, languages, crafts) —embodied cultural practices rooted in place and memory—serve as feminist acts of cultural preservation and place-making?

The project considers how inherited cultural knowledge shapes the remembering and forgetting of identity across generations. Have concepts like Norway’s Janteloven contributed to the quiet erosion of Scandinavian cultural memory in my family ? Are domestic Slovak traditions—such as foodways and storytelling—more visible having travelled through our maternal lines? Within the settler-colonial context of Canada, where truth must precede reconciliation, how might this work acknowledge and respect the complexities of reclaiming European heritage on Indigenous land? And finally, what can European cultural memory work offer Alberta and Canada in 2025, when approached with humility, care, and critical reflection?
